Hi,
I am looking for upgrading from a Canon Digital Rebel 2000 to a Digital SLR. It has the following lenses:
a) 18-35 Cannon Lens
b) 70-300 Tamaron Lens

I am considering buying either a Canon 300D/350D/400D or Nikon 40x.

I have the following question:
1. Can I use the lenses mentioned above with the Canon's Digital SLRs?

If yes, then I could probably avoid Nikon.

I am not a avid photographer, but just have the film based camera in the family which I am trying to upgrade.

Thanks.

FYI the D40 from Nikon is even smaller than the XTi/400D so if you think the XTi is small boy the D40 is a hell of a lot smaller.

Yes the 2000 used EF EOS lens so yes you can use your lenses on a Canon Rebel 300D/400D eetc.

  1. 1) Yes they should be

Any EF lens should be upward compatible.

  3. Since "avoiding Nikon" is your goal, go ahead and get the Canon. >sigh< I like the D40x better, but you are you and I am me.

Among the group named, clearly the 400D is the better choice.

  4. go to canon's website find the digital slr cameras manual names are coded like xti=400 (not sure) but it will say somewhere on their site or the manual once you download it.
but the manual will tell you which lenses you can use with which camera…most newer canon's take ef only whereas some take ef and efs but the manual tells the truth…

  5. Since you already own lenses for your Rebel, it makes sense to stick with a Canon DSLR. The Canon 18-35 lens should be completely compatible as a wide angle to normal lens. And the Tamron lens will probably work fine (but I've read that there have been compatibility issues with some third party lenses on newer cameras).

You probably ought to consider buying an additional lens to cover the 35-70 mm gap. With the 1.6x conversion factor for the digital cameras, I think you'll find that you're missing some of the most used focal lengths … 55-110mm … (35 mm equivalent).
