As a person with no allegiance to any specific make, I find their dominating digital market share a bit intriguing.

I understand Nikon and Canon have dominated the film scene for many years, but I can't figure out why they still have such a large following on the digital format. The cameras they design are built like film cameras which happen to store digitally, like staying to the 3:2 format, and such. Other companies are moving to a more computer friendly 4:3 format, and building digital cameras from the ground up to suit their purpose. It would seem to me that if someone wanted to shoot digitally, they would want to shoot with a camera made specifically to do just that, right?

I'm not bashing Canon and Nikon (I own a Canon and a Nikon film SLR), but I just don't understand it. Is it because all these photographers who used to shoot on film are familiar with the Canon and Nikon feel, and don't want to buy new lenses, or is it because they still have the best product?

They're the best product for the price. People become "loyal" to certain companies because they've grown accustomed to the brand. This is especially true of electronic and automobiles. Some people won't buy anything but Chevy, because of how it's made, where it's made, and past experience. I personally wouldn't choose a Chevy but… Look at MP3 Players, the Apple Ipod gives you the best bang for your buck, and hasn't been surpassed by any other MP3 manufacture! Sure, you could get an expensive Leica or cheap Panasonic…but how comfortable will you be with your purchase? That's how I look at it.

  1. Well for me, I learned on a Nikon, so felt more comfortable buying a Nikon Digital because I know what all the buttons and everything. Also the price isn't so bad. If I had the money I would buy a more expensive digital large format and the manufacturer wouldn't matter, the quality would.

I own a Nikon SLR, another Nikon digital Coolpix, and I'm getting ready to jump into the digital SLR scene…I'll be sticking with Nikon!!

  3. Both camera companies produce some of the best cameras in the world be it film or digital (SLR style). You will see that they are used all around the world by all types of photographers professional and amateur alike. They are used for weddings, portraits, snapshots, travel photography, newspapers, magazines and are in war zones. You need a camera that will take abuse but still give you what you want when you need the shot. This includes the lenses and flashes for these cameras. Most professionals know the difference when paying for a 300mm f~2.8 lens and why they are getting it.

Your ratio aspect that you are using for the digital SLR, is something the manufactures have lenses to compensate for this which are mostly affected at the wide angle range.

I shoot on Nikons and I can pull out a lens that is about 25 years old (55mm macro) but it works just fine on a new DSLR (D100, D200 and D2Xs). How many other cameras can still do that. Others will think this is unnecessary but that is for me and others that like the fact they stayed with the same mount system same way with the hot shoe flash.

If it really bothered me shooting in this format I would just shoot on my Bronica medium format camera.

I will stick with my Nikon's

    Hope this helps,
    Kevin
