I love that feature because it lets me take pictures from practically every angle. Should I sacrifice that creative liberty for the advantages of a digital SLR? Is it worth it?
I'm deciding if I should buy a Canon PowerShot S3 or a DSLR.

Probably because SLR's in general don't do live preview, i.e. you can't see the picture you are about to take on the LCD. You can only see it displayed after it's been taken.

The exception to this is the Olympus EVOLT E-330. It has live preview and a tilting LCD for high/low angle shots (no swivel though).

  3. SLR's don't have live preview because there's a mirror between the sensor and the lens that swings out of the way when you shoot. Live preview would require an additional sensor that would increase cost without any added benefit in picture quality.

If you have to think if you need an SLR or a P&S then you need a P&S.
